The Basics

Is Yoga For Me?

Absolutely!!!!  Yoga is for everyone, right where you are right now!  Contrary to what you might have heard, you do not have to be a certain age, have a certain degree of flexibility, be at a certain fitness level or any other limiting category you might put yourself into.  Yoga can and should be enjoyed by people at all levels.  One of the most beautiful aspects of a yoga practice is that it starts where you are today.  It is a constant flow of challenging and growing and learning and it doesn't take being a professional to get started.  Each yoga class is categorized and detailed to fit individual needs and we have specific classes designed just for beginners.

Always keep in mind that yoga is an individual discipline practiced in what is usually a group setting.  Because of this, in the various classes you will see people at different levels on their own yoga journeys.  Do not be alarmed or intimidated by this.  Yoga poses look different on everyone and each person will push themselves to the levels that feel most comfortable or challenging to them.  Release your mind of how you "think" the poses should look.  Your journey of transformation will be unlike that same journey for another person.  As a matter of fact, your journey will most likely be different in every class.  At Kahanu Yoga and Meditation Spa, your experience is your own.

And by the way, yoga isn't just for girls!  We encourage men to join all of our yoga classes and to sign up for some specifically male oriented training (with a focus on strength and endurance to minimize injury during your particular sporting experiences) and see if just maybe yoga isn't exactly what you thought it was.  You will feel yourself challenged beyond anything you thought possible!

Getting Started

You choose the classes, packages and options that are right for YOU.  Sign up online here, in person at our spa or give us a call.  We highly recommend stopping in to visit our retail store, take a tour of the spa, get familiar with our far infrared sauna and SpaCapsule rooms and check out our meditation area.  There is always a professional on site to discuss options and offerings and to answer any questions you might have.  We are here to help you every step of the way.

What About My First Class?
We can all be a little nervous when trying out something new.  Whether you are a new student trying out yoga for the first time or are an experienced Yogi trying out a new studio and new instructors for the first time there can always be an element of nerves associated with the unknown.  We are here to help ease that anxiety and answer any questions you might have.
  1. Please be on time and stay the entire time.  Students arriving more than 5 minutes late for class will not be admitted to class. On days (such as Sundays, early mornings and some evenings) when we do not have coverage for the front desk, it is imperative you are a few minutes early.  Class will start on time and the door will be locked a couple of minutes early to allow for this.
  2. First time students plan on being at the studio at least 15 minutes prior to your first class to fill out paperwork, take a tour and meet your instructor. If you must leave a class early, let your instructor know in advance and always plan on taking time for a Savasana.
  3. Clothing
    • Do not wear baggy clothes (they can make many of the poses annoying for you - and sweat drenched baggy sweat pants are NOT comfortable - particularly in a hot yoga class)
    • For hot yoga consider shorts, tank tops and sports bras
    • If you are not taking a hot yoga class, long yoga pants can also be used as a aid to certain poses and can be very helpful
    • Shirts are not required for male clients
  4. Do not eat just prior to coming to class
  5. Hydrate yourself throughout the day but refrain from chugging a bottle of water right before class begins or during the training itself.  Your body needs a lot of water to function properly.  The more you sweat, the more water you need.  Trying to "catch up" on your hydration will not work. Acclimate your body to yoga faster by creating a practice of drinking water to stay hydrated at all times
  6. Do not stare at the other practitioners but do utilize them to adjust your own form and to learn.  Resist the urge to compare yourself.  Your journey of transformation is your own.  Your instructor is there to help.
  7. Remain quiet during a yoga session.  Enter the studio area quietly and begin your transformation from the outside world to the serene peacefulness available within your soul.  Remember to turn all electronic devices off (vibrate mode is NOT considered "off")
  8. Let yourself sweat!  It's good for you and to be honest, wiping off the sweat, particularly in a hot yoga class, is a complete waste of energy.
  9. Whenever you can, bring your mind back to your breath.  Staying conscious of the calming effects, the flow of the movements, the strain of pushing yourself just a little harder and the awareness of what your body is telling you will maximize your transformation efforts.
  10. Don't push too hard.  Challenging yourself is a really good thing but listen to your body and ensure you are not going beyond what it wants you to do.  Minimize the risk of injury by paying close attention to where you truly are in the process.
  11. Come prepared with:  A bottle of water (water is available for sale in the retail area as well), your own yoga mat and a non slip yoga towel for hot yoga classes (yoga mats offered for sale or rent, just ask the front desk and they will help), and a small hand towel for those times when you really do need to wipe the sweat off your face or hands.  Optional (yet recommended):  A change of clothes for the ride home and a bath towel for showers.
How Does the Far Infrared Sauna Work?
  • The sauna sessions are private and are on a first come first served bases when free so reservations are strongly recommended.
  • Soft, large, luxurious towels and robes are provided.
  • Complete nudity is not allowed in the sauna but most people remove all clothing and wrap up in a towel to enjoy the healing, penetrating heat without having to remain clothed.
  • All sessions are limited to 20 minutes per day.
  • A staff member will go in and set the timer for 22 minutes giving you ample time to undress and still enjoy 20 minutes of sauna relaxation and relief.
  • Spa and meditation music is provided.
  • All you need to do is relax and enjoy the experience.  One 20 minute session and you will feel so good you will certainly want to come back for more!

How Do I prepare for the SpaCapsule Massage Session?
  • Unlike the far infrared sauna, there is no need to undress for this massage session.
  • The SpaCapsule room is private and is on a first come first served basis when free so reservations are strongly recommended.
  • A staff member will help you get started and leave you in your private room to enjoy the experience.
  • Simply remove your shoes, lie down on the bed, close the lid and enjoy....fully clothed...a whole new experience.
  • SpaCapsule massage is dry to the touch but the moving water (in a bag similar to a water bed) massages and relaxes your tired, aching muscles while basking you in a feeling of peace and tranquility.
